How to Find and Contact Podcast Sponsors 🤝 (Podcraft Pointers)

Hello, Podcrafters!

Last month, Losh Moodaley wrote a piece for us on how CPM thinking leads indie podcasters to underprice their shows when arranging sponsorships.

That initial guide reframed how we should think about our audience when approaching potential sponsors, and why it's more about access than pure scale and reach.

I learned a lot from it. But I had one big question for Losh afterwards.

"What about reaching out to those potential sponsors?"

That's the part I've struggled with the most. I've got a long-running podcast with a highly-engaged niche audience, and I can talk up the power of podcasting all day long.

But when I get in touch with companies I think would be a great fit, those conversations seldom go anywhere. Often, I don't even get a response.

So I had very selfish reasons for asking Losh to write this follow-up piece, but I know it's a problem many other indie podcasters struggle with, too.

I'm delighted to say that I really took a lot from her tips, advice, and guidance. I particularly loved the idea of recording an audio clip and saying, "Here's how your ad would sound on my show."

Hello, Podcrafters! A pal of mine spent years working in radio advertising. He once told me that his entire job boiled down to one number: How many people will hear it? As podcasters, we should be cautious about borrowing that model when it comes to finding sponsors. I'm not going to get into the nuances of radio audiences vs podcast audiences, which is a whole other topic. But even if we compare two different podcast audiences purely by download numbers, we can miss the point entirely. To...
