Could YouTube-first creation kill podcasting? (Podcraft Pointers)

Hello, Podcrafters!

Anecdotally, I've watched a few of my favourite shows let their audio feeds run dry whilst they still happily publish new episodes on YouTube. This makes me sad.

On this week's Podcraft, we got into what podcasting needs to do to guard against this slide to YouTube-first content, and it ties in with a timely development with Apple Podcasts and video.

We also talk about building content curation systems. When information is abundant, attention is scarce, and curation becomes strategic.

But how can you stay on top of releases, stories, and opportunities for your podcast or newsletter without having to check 50 different sites and feeds by hand?

Is it possible to build a pull-based system that delivers relevant material to you automatically, so you can sift through it and pick out the stuff that catches your eye?

Jacob reckons so. And he talks me through it on this week's episode.

Recent studies show plants can respond to vibrations. Some even release more nectar when they detect the frequency of bee wingbeats nearby.

🐱 Can Your Cat Be a Podcast?

Yup, you read that right.

In 2026, the word "podcast" seems blurry.

Ultimately, you're free to call anything a podcast.

You could call your cat a podcast.

But... if your cat can't be found in Apple Podcasts, Overcast, or Podcast Addict, people will reasonably question the label.

That doesn't make your cat inferior. It just means she probably isn't a podcast.

Hello, Podcrafters! I've given this advice many times before... Just keep showing up. Be consistent. Play the long game. On its own, it’s solid guidance. But as Lindsay argues in her latest piece, it's incomplete. To support this newsletter, please check out Alitu.com - the best, quickest, and easiest podcast editing software on the planet. Podcasters are people. People with real lives. And real life, as Lindsay reminds us, doesn't really care if you have a content calendar. But the good news...

Hello, Podcrafters! On last week's episode of Podcraft, we agreed that sponsorship was broadly overrated for the average indie creator. But... that doesn't mean it isn't the right fit for you. Maybe you podcast within a specialist hobby, professional field, or enthusiast community. In many niches, sponsorship fits naturally because you're talking about certain tools, products, or services anyway. Hello, Podcrafters! If you think of your time and effort as a pizza, there are only so many slices to go round 🍕 The problem is that podcasting advice wants everything to have its own piece. Daily clips. Perfect audio. Celebrity guests. 12-page show notes. A ritual sacrifice to the algorithm gods.
