Can you make money from a podcast from day one? 🤔 (Podcraft Pointers)

Hello, Podcrafters!

So... can you make money podcasting from day one?

Well, it isn’t impossible! I’ve known podcasters to have pretty decent sponsorships set up with new shows before they’ve even published an episode.

The catch is, this wasn’t their first rodeo.

These were accomplished creators who had built audiences around other channels previously. Even though the podcasts in question were in the pre-launch stage, it’s stretching it to view them as “day one”.

If this is your first podcast, I’d recommend focusing on building something worth listening to and growing an early audience around it first. Monetisation opportunities will come, but remember the 3As – Audience, Authority, Assets!

  • Audience means stuff like Patreon, exclusive content, and merch. If your listeners love the show, they'll support it.
  • Authority could be anything from coaching to sponsorship. These methods work because your audience sees you as the go-to person in your niche.
  • Assets are the products and services you offer. These methods work because you’ve created something valuable that exists beyond the microphone.

Most podcasters don't start because they want to become audio engineers or spend hours editing.

As podcasters, we should be cautious about borrowing that model when it comes to finding sponsors. I'm not going to get into the nuances of radio audiences vs podcast audiences, which is a whole other topic. But even if we compare two different podcast audiences purely by download numbers, we can miss the point entirely. To...
