Avoid this podcast episode length at all costs ⚠️ (Podcraft Pointers)

Mic Drop Fact: Elephants use infrasound to communicate
Sounds below 20 Hz (infrasound) can be felt more than heard and are used by elephants for long-distance communication. These sounds can be felt from several kilometres away.

We've all been there: 45 minutes into a guest interview, the big points already covered, but still stretching to reach the hour. It feels natural since that’s how long we scheduled. But your audience isn’t watching the clock. In this week’s feature, we break down the episode length that hurts more than it helps.

Before diving in, I also want to pause to acknowledge some sad news. Last week, we were shocked and saddened by the passing of our friend and indie podcast pioneer Todd Cochrane. I met Todd in May at The Podcast Show, where he joined me for an episode of Podcraft. He had a huge presence, a deep love for this medium, and he spent more than twenty years helping it grow. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

Can a podcast rooted in one city or neighbourhood really matter to listeners halfway across the world? Or should hyperlocal shows focus purely on the people right on their doorstep?

🕯️ Remembering Todd Cochrane (Podcast)

On this poignant tribute episode of the New Media Show, host Rob Greenlee is joined by Podcast Hall of Famers Adam Curry and Rob Walch, plus Blubrry VP Mike Dell, to reflect on Todd’s journey from Navy service to podcasting pioneer, his impact on the industry, his advocacy for creators, and the lessons he leaves for the future.

Hey! According to an article by the Hollywood Reporter: "Podcasting is at an inflection point: Investigative deep dives are out, cheaper chitchat is in, and it’s got to be on video to break through.” Debates about video vs audio in podcasting have been loud this past year, but hard numbers have been scarce. But Libsyn and Sounds Profitable have shared data that challenges much of this narrative. I dove into the data to bring you some key takeaways. Data vs. Hype: The Truth About Audio-Only...

Mic Drop Fact: The Ocean’s Secret Telephone Line In the ocean, there is a natural layer called the SOFAR channel (Sound Fixing and Ranging) where sound can travel for thousands of miles. It forms at a depth where temperature, pressure, and salinity combine to let sound move with little loss of energy. Whales, for example, use this channel to communicate across vast distances. ✂️ CREATOR CUTS💡 📝 Best wireless lavalier mics for creators in 2025? (Blog) I used to take a digital recorder, two...

Mic Drop Fact: The loudest sound on earth. The eruption of the Krakatoa volcano (Indonesia 1883) produced a sound heard 3,000 miles away. This makes the Krakatoa eruption the loudest recorded sound in history.
