Why would you publish a 37-minute-long podcast episode? Because you have 37 minutes of value.

That's always been the answer to the age-old question of optimal podcast length.

Podcast episodes should be as long as they need to be, and not a minute longer.

If you have a value-packed 15-minute conversation, don't stretch it out to half an hour. And if you record an engrossing chat that runs over the hour, don't try to chop it down to the 60-minute mark.

With that all said, this approach still raises some questions:

  • Can you publish 5 minutes one week and 2 hours the next?
  • What happens if you record multiple hours of value?
  • Do listeners prefer certain lengths?
